Bass
Leisure Hall, Manchester, general refurbishment
including
ceilings, partitions, electrical, and other ancillary works
This project was carried
out in 1988 but we still consider this to be one of the most
impressive suspended ceilings ever installed. At 9 metres at its highest
point, with a perfect curve, and carrying many tons of equipment e.g.
lighting modules, air-conditioning ducts, etc, it was no easy feat
working out the load bearing. Laser technology had only just
become available and was tested to its limits on this huge span. The
leisure hall opened for business
during the day and throughout the evening and everything from scaffold towers to
materials had to be removed each morning. The ceiling
manufacturers could not produce the pink tiles, or the decorative red
& blue, in time for the contract program therefore they were spray
painted on-site before being fitted. The pictures show
smaller curved ceilings and other areas of the building
